on Monday the Marketing Data Science event took place. After the event, we briefly interviewed several students and a speaker about their experience. We have done this so that the event does not go unnoticed and student get encouraged to join the event next year!
What is the Marketing Data Science event?
The MARUG Marketing Data Science Event presents you a nice opportunity to get more information on how marketing data science works in practice. This event is organised by the Master Marketing Team. The event is directed towards MSc Marketing Analytics and Data Science students. It is a great opportunity to meet interesting companies, who will give short presentations about who they are, what they are doing and how they work with big data.
Master student:
"I wanted to join the event because building a career is important and to have an orientation on different companies. Also it was nice to have an idea about the future work and I am very happy that I went to the event. I would recommend the event especially to (pre)master students interested in Data Science to get the feel of your future employer.
My favourite thing about the day is hard to say, just the overall day and seeing other students in real life again in stead of behind the screen. I also enjoined the different insights from the different companies and presentations. The companies where based in Groningen, I also liked that. My favourite company was Reprise."
Board member:
"I really liked the event, it was not initially my field of expertise but it was really insightful to hear al the different companies. The variation in speakers was also very pleasant and the social afterwards of course is very nice. My favourite thing about today was definitely the social because it is very interesting to talk to everyone personally and get different insights. My favourite thing on the program was the lecture from Reprise because the threshold was really low and therefore easy to follow and still really insightful. It also contrasted really well with the other lectures. The first one was a PhD-student who went really in to the details on what he was working on.
I would recommend it and it was really nice how it all came together. The weather, the location and the drinks afterwards was a big bonus. So yes, I would recommend it!"
Committee member MMT spring:
"Organising it was a lot of fun, we really worked together as a committee. It all come together at the end and it was really nice. We had a lot of different companies and speakers. They where all different but it still came all togethet, that was good to see.
I liked the first speaker the most, he talked about privacy and data. It was very complex what he was talking about, but he made it so easy that everyone could follow and understand it. It was very relevant in today’s world and I enjoyed how he explained it.
I would also recommend joining this committee next year, 100 %. This is already the second semester I am in this committee. I was in MMT fall and I really enjoyed it so that’s why I joined the MMT spring as well."
Harvest digital speaker:
"I did a presentation on behalf of Harvest digital. The presentation was about marketing automation and I took the students on an journey in terms of looking at marketing automation using your data and the second part was a workshop where we created a journey for a company that we used as an example. That’s what we did here today.
I very much enjoyed the event, it is great to see students being so engaged and instantly picking up the material that we presented. It often can be quite difficult because it is a steep learning curve. I was really surprised that many students were able to pick it up so fast and with some pretty great results. I was impressed and the location was awesome.
For students I would recommend it, it is highly valuable to see what companies, especially in Groningen, are working in this field. For other companies I would recommend joining and giving presentations because it is really great to interact with the students that are going to start on the job market pretty soon. Just to bring about some enthusiasm about the work that we do and connect with students that are entering the job market soon.
Bachelor student:
"I really enjoyed the event. For me it is different because there are a lot of master students and I am still in my bachelors. But still I found it very interesting and the companies where very nice. The PhD-student, the first speaker of today, I found very interesting. He had a lot of research and he showed us his results and I really enjoyed that. A highlight of today was meeting some new people and working in different teams. We where in different group throughout the day, so you met a lot of different people. Overall I think that it was a great success.
I would recommend it because it is quite informative and a fun day. You get to meet new people and new companies. The main thing I learned is that you have less privacy then you think. If you think of data you know that there Is a lot of data available for companies. But on days like this you get a reminder on how much there actually is. Next time I am maybe going to check my cookies before I accept them."
